Black History Month: Stories on Columbus activists, events, businesses

Dealing with inequities As soon as psychologist Whitney Raglin Bignall steps into a new patient’s room at the primary-care clinic where she works, she sometimes sees a bit of tension ease in the nervous parents and children staring back at her.  Their shy smiles of hello might suddenly reach up toward their eyes, their shoulders might relax a little once the invisible weight of history lifts from them.  Only about 5% of practicing psychologists are Black, and that number is even lower when it comes to those who specialize in pediatric care, as Raglin Bignall does. During this Black History Month  which falls after a year racial reckonings across the country and amid a pandemic in which Black Americans are nearly three times more likely to die than others  experts say speaking openly about mental wellness in minority communities may be more important than ever.
