Subnivean Awards to feature all-star writers discussion, finalists readings | Arts and Entertainment

OSWEGO â âLemony Snicketâ author Daniel Handler, April Sinclair (one of Oprahâs â25 Living Legendsâ) and luminary poet Arisa White will share their knowledge and insights in conversation, hosted by and for SUNY Oswegoâs community but also made open to the public because of their level of popularity. The virtual chat featuring these Subnivean Awards judges, followed by finalists reading their work, will mark the first-ever literary competition showcase for the collegeâs student-run literary publication, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 22. After the three celebrity authors chat, the audience will hear the work of Subnivean Awards finalists â poets Chaun Ballard, Joan Kwon Glass, Canaan Morse and Emma Wynn; fiction writers Nicole Lynn Cohen, Jared Green, Angie Kang and Kyle Rea.

SUNY Oswego launches new undergraduate-run digital literary publication, Subnivean

OSWEGO â Itâs not common for an undergraduate student to work on a literary magazine that includes submissions from a former U.S. poet laureate and other award winners, but that, Soma Mei Sheng Frazier said, is the beauty of the new SUNY Oswego offering called Subnivean. Launched in the fall semester, Subnivean is a new, undergraduate-staffed digital publication concentrated in a class taught by Frazier, an assistant professor of English and creative writing. The debut issue featured âsome dazzling writing by literary heavyweights,â Frazier said, including U.S. Poet Laureate Emeritus Juan Felipe Herrera and literary luminaries Arisa White, Meg Hurtado Bloom, John Sibley Williams, Sofie Harsha, Jendi Reiter, Angie Kang, Louise Wareham Leonard and Jane Wong. Frazier also complimented âa beautiful videoâ by alumnus David Moore. More than 3,000 unique visitors have enjoyed the inaugural effort.
