Not small as in petty. Small as in the boll weevil.
Yes, that’s right: the quarter-inch, crawly, leaf-eating boll weevil.
I learned this from Susan Spencer-Wendel, my longtime colleague at The Palm Beach Post, who told me, in one of our last face-to-face conversations: “A boll weevil landed on my arm today. I watched him all day. It was fascinating.”
Keep in mind that Susan could not swat the boll weevil off her arm, nor could she move her arms, or her legs, or just about anything except her laser blue eyes.
“When is the last time you noticed a boll weevil?”
