Wāhine Māori to take starring role in new sports initiative

Elite athlete and Sky Sport presenter Honey Hireme is thrilled with the new initiative. Māori women and girls will now have a starring role in sport, thanks to a new multi-year deal between Women in Sport Aotearoa/Ngā Wāhine Hākinakina o Aotearoa (Wispa) and Māori Women’s Development Inc (MWDI). The new partnership, which was announced at Wispa’s Women in Sport captains’ lunch at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday, focuses on boosting engagement of wāhine Māori of all ages in play, active recreation and sport. It provides pathways into sport business and journalism through mentorships and scholarships, and supports young wāhine Māori into positions of influence in play, active recreation and sport.

Sorry is the hardest word, but gymnasts also want an understanding of all their harm and suffering

The allegations are similar to many made around the world of gymnastics. A formal apology is a good start for the gymnastics community, but it’s about actions rather than words as those who have experienced abuse in the sport seek redress. Gymnastics New Zealand chief executive Tony Compier on Wednesday formally apologised for the abuse many in the community had experienced. That followed the release of an independent review that highlighted the extent of the “insidious culture” within the sport, uncovered by a Stuff investigation in August 2020. Former Commonwealth Games gymnast, turned leading academic and advocate, Dr Georgia Cervin said it’s great to see the apology but “we re yet to see the understanding of the harm being suffered”.
