Any donation of over $30,000 must be declared within 10 working days of it being received.
Three donations above that threshold were made to the Māori Party between March and October last year, but were not declared to the commission until recently.
Former Māori Party co-leader John Tamihere donated a total of $158,000 dollars over 2020, Aotearoa Te Kahu donated $120,000 and the National Urban Māori Authority just under $50,000.
The Electoral Commission referred the matter to the police earlier this month and the police have now confirmed it s passed the case on to the SFO. ....

The police have referred the issue of donations to the Māori Party to the Serious Fraud Office for further investigation, they said tonight.
The Electoral Commission had previously referred the matter of party donations totalling $320,000 to the police: $158,000 from former party leader John Tamihere; $120,000 from Aotearoa Te Kahu; and $50,000 from the National Urban Māori Authority.
In its statement, the Electoral Commission said it was forwarding the matter to the police for further investigation relating to failure to declare donations or aggregated donations over $30,000 made to the Māori Party within 10 working days. ....

The Electoral Commission had previously referred donations totalling $320,000 to police:
They involved $158,000 from former party leader John Tamihere; $120,000 from Aotearoa Te Kahu; and $50,000 from the National Urban Maori Authority, which were declared late.
Maori Party president Che Wilson said a mistake had been made and it lay with party volunteers who had been learning the ropes .
The lateness of declaring donations is not likely to be the concern of the Serious Fraud Office ....
