TSUNAMI WARNING LATEST (1.25pm) GNS Science has downgraded tsunami warnings for New Zealand, advising the largest waves have now passed. A National Emergency Management Agency release says the threat level s now downgraded to a beach and marine threat for all areas that were previously under land and marine threat. It says all people who were evacuated can now return. The advice remains for all areas under beach and marine threat, to stay off beach and shore areas. Doubtless Bay residents in the Far North reporting seeing a surge of water come into the harbour. The surge came!, one resident posted on social media. Israeli authorities on Sunday (Monday NZT) advanced plans to build nearly 800 homes in West Bank settlements, in a last-minute surge of approvals before the friendly Trump Administration leaves office later this week.
COGAT, the Israeli defence body that authorises settlement construction, confirmed the approvals, which drew swift condemnations from the Palestinians. The United Nations considers Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories to be illegal under international law.
The anti-settlement monitoring group Peace Now said that over 90 per cent of the homes lay deep inside the West Bank, which the Palestinians seek as the heartland of a future independent state, and more than 200 homes were in unauthorised outposts the Government had decided to legalise.

US President Donald Trump will leave Washington DC on Wednesday morning (Thursday NZT), just before President-elect Joe Biden s inauguration later in the day, to begin his post-presidential life in Florida.
Refusing to abide by tradition and participate in the ceremonial transfer of power, Trump will instead hold his own departure ceremony at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland before his final flight aboard Air Force One.
Officials are considering an elaborate send-off event reminiscent of the receptions he s received during state visits abroad, complete with a red carpet, colour guard, military band and even a 21-gun salute, according to a person familiar with the planning who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement.
