Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia stepped down on February 18 following the detention of the opposition United National Movement’s (UNM) Chairman Nikanor (Nika) Melia. The previous day, Tbilisi City Court ruled to place Melia in pretrial detention on charges of leading the storming of the parliament during the June 2019 protests. Gakharia resigned amid a protracted political conflict between the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party and the opposition following the October 2020 parliamentary elections. It was the third parliamentary election in a row won by the party. The largest opposition party, the Unified National Movement (UNM), won 27.18 per cent of the vote.  ....

Leader of the opposition Lelo for Georgia party and co-founder of the TBC Bank Mamuka Khazaradze recently released a statement in which he called for the immediate resignation of the newly appointed Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili as well as the head of the Special Service of the State Security, Anzor Chubinidze.
The statement came shortly after the Pirveli TV Channel has claimed to have acquired a secret audio tape in which one can, allegedly, hear Bera Ivanishvili and PM Garibashvili (son of the former prime minister and founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvili) discussing the possible punishments of the individuals who criticized the current government. ....
