The blinged-out swimsuits and colorful plumage seen at Caribbean Carnivals from London to New York to Toronto take months to complete and involve an industry of designers, seamstresses, feather workers and wire benders. The women who take part in this masquerade “mas,” it’s called have transformed a tradition rooted in Roman Catholicism and Black resistance to slavery into a performance of female empowerment, resistance and self-expression. ....

Events like J’Ouvert in New York and Carnival in London have seen violent incidents. But the way they are policed says a lot about what happens when Black people gather.

J’Ouvert has its roots in denial.
In the late 1700s, French colonists in Trinidad began hosting masquerade balls that the enslaved Black Caribbean population was banned from attending. Undeterred, the enslaved peoples hosted their own festivals, often as a way of mocking their enslavers. Upon emancipation in 1838, Black Caribbean peoples participated in the Carnival celebration, bringing in their own customs and cultural traditions. ....

NAPLES, FEB 2 - A large landslide crashed onto the
state highway at Amalfi near Naples on Tuesday.
The cliff above the road crumbled sending earth, rocks and
boulders onto the road below.
There were no immediate reports of victims but sources said they
could not be ruled out yet either.
Part of the landslide also reached the beach below the road.
Amalfi Mayor Daniele Milano said it would take hours to clear
the highway.
Only then would authorities be sure there were no victims, he
said.
A number of houses will be evacuated, Milano said. ....

When Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States, it was a moment of political triumph that had been decades in the making. His long career in public office spanned
eight presidents, from Richard Nixon to Barack Obama, but the nation s highest office always eluded him. Now, Biden, 78, finally joins their ranks.
The story begins with an Irish Catholic family in northeastern Pennsylvania. Biden was born in 1942, the eldest son of Joseph Robinette Biden Sr. and Catherine Eugenia Finnegan Biden. He was also a son of Scranton, Pennsylvania, which would become central to his political identity. The Biden family moved to Delaware when he was 10 years old. ....
