MANHATTAN The U.S. Bishops Conference chairman of evangelization and catechesis is calling the Vatican’s recently instituted ministry of the catechist a “beautiful thing” to try to evangelize an increasingly secularized nation.
“This is a way to highlight that we really need to take catechesis seriously because we need people who are officially trained and commissioned to do this important work,” Auxiliary Bishop Andrew Cozzens of St. Paul and Minneapolis told The Tablet. “This is the next and a very important step in making sure our catechists are well-formed and equipped and well commissioned to do the important work they have to do.” ....

Indian Catholics have welcomed the news that Pope Francis has created a lay ministry to encourage greater participation of men and women in spreading the Catholic faith.
The papal letter
Antiquum Ministerium (Ancient Ministry) was released on May 11 in eight languages.
“We wholeheartedly thank the Holy Father and welcome the gesture by him for recognizing our foot soldiers who are the actual personnel helping in evangelization and spreading the Good News of the Church,” Bishop Gerald John Mathias of Lucknow told UCA News. ....

With an apostolic letter entitled
Antiquum Ministerium, released on May 11, the Pope established the lay ministry, and announced that the Vatican would soon publish a ritual for the commissioning of catechists.
The papal document issued in the form of a
motu proprio does not clearly define the role of the catechist. Instead the Pope says he will “invite the episcopal conferences to render effective the ministry of catechist, determining the necessary process of formation and devising the most appropriate forms for the service…”
In his apostolic letter the Pope stresses that the role of the catechist should be “carried out in a fully ‘secular’ manner, avoiding any form of clericalization.” He underlines the importance of lay people in bringing the Gospel message into their everyday lives, “interwoven with family and social relationships.” But he calls for recognition of a class of lay people who have a special commitment to evang ....
