Retirees in Anambra State have said they will soon embark on hunger strike in order to compel governor Willie Obiano to pay their gratuities.
According to the retirees, the last time they were paid gratuities was four years ago.
In a statement made available to Daily Trust on Monday, the Anambra state chairman of pensioners, Mr Anthony Ugozor said that since the state government is owing pensioners in the state four years arrears of gratuities, they would hold a meeting early next year to take a decision on the matter.
“We don’t know what again to do on this. You know we are longer in active service, so the government is treating our matter with levity because it knows we can no longer embark on an industrial dispute,” Ugozor said. ....

As many Nigerians and citizens across the world are celebrating the festive period, although in lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic, pensioners in some states across the country are lamenting that they had not been paid their pensions and/or gratuities by various state governments.
Some of the state chapters of the pensioners’ unions said this development had caused them to celebrate the festivities in suffering, with some regretting that they had been abandoned after serving the government for many years.
Based on this development, pensioners in Edo State said they would resume their protest in January to draw more attention to their plight. ....

The state chairman of the pensioners, Anthony Ugozor, disclosed this to our correspondent in Awka, the Anambra State capital on Sunday.
