I was reminded this week of why I dislike the warmer months of the year so much (in addition to the fact that they’re warmer). I found a big spider on my kitchen counter. He was just sitting there, not even bothered by my presence, as if he were waiting for me to make something to eat so he could crawl on it.
But I’ll take that over swarms of flying insects. I saw all those “killer bees” movies when I was a kid.
2021 marks the year that the cicadas come back. Like bell bottom jeans and other things we don’t really need to see again, they return every once in a while to remind us, “Hey, we’re still a thing.” They come in 17-year cycles, and this is our lucky year (especially the months of May and June), so go out and see them before they vanish again until 2038.

Tempest Storm, who has died aged 93, was known as the Queen of Burlesque; she shot to fame in the 1950s with a risqué act in Las Vegas and was still strutting her stuff in her 80s.
Burlesque performers are often described as strippers, but their art has little to do with the in-your-face silicone-enhanced excess of modern strip clubs. The origins of burlesque date back to a time when total nudity was against the law and the art of adult entertainment lay in the coy tease and the saucy seduction, not the revelation, with dancers mostly (though not entirely – Tempest Storm was arrested several times for nudity and topless dancing) retaining their modesty behind feathers or fans.

Tempest Storm, one of the most celebrated strippers of midcentury burlesque, who continued plying her craft until she was in her 80s not because she had to, but because she could died on Tuesday at her home in Las Vegas. She was 93.
Harvey Robbins, her longtime manager, confirmed the death.
Routinely named in the same ardent breath as the great 20th-century ecdysiasts Lili St. Cyr, Blaze Starr and Gypsy Rose Lee, Storm was every inch as ecdysiastical as they, and for far longer. Almost certainly the last of her ilk, she was, at her height in the 1950s and early ’60s, famous the world over, as celebrated for her flame-red tresses as for her vaunted 40-inch bust.
