A small number of people vaccinated against Covid have been admitted to hospital with the disease and died, researchers have found, but most were frail and elderly and caught the virus before the jab could have taken effect.
Scientists say their findings are reassuring. They bear out the conclusions of trials of the vaccines in use in the UK, which show the jabs are highly effective but do not protect everyone.
The Isaric/Co-CIN study was designed to give the government’s scientific advisory body, Sage, an early signal of whether or not the vaccines were working. ....

A small number of people vaccinated against Covid have been admitted to hospital with the disease and died, researchers have found, but most were frail and elderly and caught the virus before the jab could take effect.
Scientists say their findings are reassuring. They bear out the conclusions of trials of the vaccines in use in the UK, which showed that the jabs are highly effective but do not protect everyone.
However, separate research published in Science suggests that people’s immune responses against the so-called Kent and South African variants are relatively feeble after a first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, but are greatly enhanced among those who have previously had Covid-19. The B117 variant, which was first discovered in Kent, is now the dominant circulating strain within the UK. The results emphasise the need for people to remain cautious until they’ve received their second dose of vaccine. ....

Just one in 100 people hospitalised with Covid since the start of Britain s vaccine rollout had received a jab at least three weeks before, new data shows.
Scientists said real-world data showing the impact of jabs on the most vulnerable people had given them a moment of joy and should reassure the public about the difference vaccines are making.  ....

UK Study Finds Pfizer Vaccine Doesn't Offer "Full Protection" From Mutant COVID Strains

by Tyler Durden

As shortages of COVID-19 vaccine supplies force more countries stretch the time between the first and second vaccine doses to try and vaccinate more people, the latest data out of a UK study of vaccination rates has stumbled on a disturbing finding:
the study found that people who have had one dose are still at risk from mutated strains of the virus.
The study, published Friday afternoon in London by Imperial College London and published in the journal Science, examined the immune responses of health-care workers following their first dose of the Pfizer jab. ....
