MIDDLESBROUGH Soroptimists are part of a worldwide network of women whose mission is to improve the lives of women, both locally and overseas. Like most organisations they had to change and adapt during lockdown so they decided their project would be to produce a book celebrating the achievements of women scientists past and present. It is called, Overcoming the Odds, and women scientists were chosen, because science is playing a major role in managing and fighting the pandemic. “We wanted the book to be an inspiration to girls and young women to perhaps consider a career in a science-related field,” said Pam Cooper, president of SI Middlesbrough, and co-author of the book. “Many of the women featured had to overcome discrimination, illness or disability and so the title Overcoming the Odds was chosen. Several Middlesbrough Soroptimists contributed and each added a personal note as to why, during the pandemic, they had made their particular choice.”
