I write to correct some of the factual misrepresentations of this process that have recently appeared in the international press. 1 The French Culture Ministry’s Call for Applications for that commission required the following materials from the artist applicants: (1) an artistic document of no more than 15 pages, (2) a portfolio presentation of five recently realized works, (3) a letter of motivation, and (4) a curriculum vitae of no more than two pages. ....
[Many thanks to Peter Jordens for bringing this item to our attention.] Anna Sansom ( The Art Newspaper) writes that France’s plan for a national memorial to the victims of slavery has been suspended after a disagreement over its concept. The Comité Marche du 23 Mai 1998 (CM98) has documented the names of 200,000 freed slaves from Guadeloupe, Guyana, Martinique, and Réunion following the abolition of slavery in 1848; it has determined that the memorial must bring attention to these 200,000 names. Sansom reports: Last June, the French ministry of culture and the ministry for overseas territories launched an open call for artists to create the memorial for the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. The announcement emphasised that the work should have a pedagogical dimension and be conceived in partnership with the organisations that had campaigned for the memorial.
