McConkey, Umberger get leadership roles in the House

CONWAY — Two returning local state representatives will be part of the Republican leadership team in the House of Representatives over the next two years.
Rep. Mark McConkey of Freedom and Rep. Karen Umberger of Conway were prevailed in November after losing their seats two years ago.
Now, McConkey has been named vice chair of the powerful Public Works and Highways Committee, and Umberger will chair the House Finance Division II Committee, responsible for the budgets of Safety, Transportation, Education, Fish and Game, the N.H. Lottery, and Police Standards and Training.
“I’m delighted,” Umberger, who held the position from 2016-18, told the Sun. ....

Most reps to attend opening day; Buco will not

CONWAY — Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the New Hampshire House of Representatives is set to open its 2021 session in a parking lot at the University of New Hampshire on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
While many of the 400 House members plan to meet in a drive-in sort of format, several have shared concerns about meeting during the coronavirus pandemic and at least one representative from Carroll County will not be in attendance.
Rep. Tom Buco (D-Conway), the county’s longest-serving Democrat, said Tuesday he won’t be making the trek to Durham to begin his eighth term.
“I will not be attending the opening session due to health concerns,” Buco said by phone. “Attendance is going to require me to drive two hours in each direction, to begin with. That requires me to use high-risk public restrooms on the road. And the same thing when I get to the location. I mean sitting in the car for four hours in the session, that’s going to require me to use the h ....

Reps not sure parking lot is the place to meet

CONWAY — If you thought the drive-in was a thing of the past, the New Hampshire House of Representatives has news for you — it isn’t. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the House will open its 2021 session in a parking lot at the University of New Hampshire on Jan. 6.
The move is not sitting well with many representatives, primarily Democrats, who believe it’s not safe for 400 members to gather at this time and would prefer the meetings take place remotely over the internet via such mediums as Zoom.
“It’s so crazy,” said Rep. Mark McConkey (R-Freedom) by phone on Tuesday. “Unfortunately, there is nothing in the rules yet that allows us to meet electronically. We will get together on Jan. 6, organize (elect a new speaker of the House), and then form the rules so we can meet electronically. We’ll probably communicate over radio signals. It sure is a strange time.” ....

Speaker Hinch died of COVID; local officials 'shocked'

CONWAY — Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald announced Thursday that autopsy results for New Hampshire Speaker of the House Dick Hinch of Merrimack, who died Wednesday at age 71, showed “the cause of Speaker Hinch’s death was COVID-19.”
“It just goes to show that we all have to be super careful,” state Senate Majority Leader-elect Jeb Bradley (R-Wolfeboro) said by phone Thursday.
Hinch is being remembered by former colleagues from the Mount Washington Valley as a “good guy” and “someone who cared very deeply about the state of New Hampshire.”
They were shocked to learn he died Wednesday from COVID-19.
Former Speaker Gene Chandler (R-Bartlett) said he had spoken with Hinch a few times over the past week after Hinch was sworn in as the newest leader of the N.H. House on Dec. 2 during an outdoor ceremony at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. ....
