Epidemics always start on a local level: sick animals on a farm, suspicious symptoms suspects among people living on the fringes of a forest, or dead animals near a water source. To control the emergence of potentially pandemic diseases, we urgently need to involve communities more effectively in surveillance systems. This is the spearhead of the PREZODE scientific initiative, which is working to build international early detection networks.
