Neighbors: Hickman reflects on 20 years as mayor


ANGOLA — A year and a half into his fifth and likely final term in office, Mayor Dick Hickman is celebrating the biggest milestone in his political career to date: 20 years in office.
“I never thought I’d be here this long, or that I’d end up loving this job as much as I do,” Hickman said during a wide-ranging 40-minute interview in his second-story office at Angola City Hall on March 12.
“In fact, being a Democrat in a Republican area, I didn’t figure I’d get reelected the first time.”
Hickman, 73, was sworn in as Angola’s 15th mayor on March 5, 2001, after the death of Mayor Edwin W. “Bill” Selman on Feb. 7, 2001. Selman, who was suffering from cancer, spent months grooming Hickman, then a park board member, for the position. ....
