Sentencing in hotpot Datuk case delayed due to new developments

PETALING JAYA: The sentencing in the case of two company directors, including a Datuk who was filmed, in a viral video, assaulting a couple at a hotpot restaurant has been pushed to May due to a new development in the case. The Magistrate’s Court heard that the restaurant owner had retracted a police report against Datuk Tan Wai Khan, 42, who had previously claimed trial to a charge of mischief under Section 427 of the Penal Code. Tan s lawyer Datuk Suraj Singh, who represented Tan and co-accused Ang Mow Loong, 40, informed the court that the defence received information that the restaurant owner made the retraction for the particular offence.

Datuk Tan Wai Khan, 42, and his friend Ang Mow Loong, 40, pleaded guilty to several charges which were read out before Magistrate Nurshahira Abd Salim. Nurshahira then fixed April 2 for sentencing. They were accused of voluntarily causing hurt to Kwan Pei Choong, 31, at the restaurant at 9 pm on Jan 12, a charge under Section 323 read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to one year’s jail or a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both, on conviction.

PETALING JAYA: Two company directors, including a Datuk who was caught on a viral video assaulting a young couple, have pleaded guilty at a Magistrate s Court here to assaulting and causing public nuisance at a steamboat restaurant in Persiaran Tropicana. Datuk Tan Wai Khan, 42, and Ang Mow Loong, 40, made the plea after the charges were read out before magistrate Nurshahira Abd Salim here on Thursday (Jan 21). The court, however, fixed April 2 for hearing of statement of facts and sentencing. According to the first charge, Tan and Ang were jointly accused of voluntarily causing harm by hitting Kwan Pei Chong, 31, at Restoran Steamboat TST, Tropicana Avenue, Damansara, at 9pm on Jan 12.
