Plan for new downtown Victoria hotel, office project headed to public hearing


Called the Montrose Wintergarden Project, the 780-798 Fort St. component would see a 2,152-square-foot, three-storey open space with an atrium with commercial uses. It would be topped by a podium with offices on the second and third level, offering a green roof and patio on top of the third floor. A 17-storey triangular-shaped tower would rise above the podium.
Also included would be the renovation and heritage designation of Montrose building, designed by Charles Elwood Watkins for Andrew Sheret, with commercial units retained and upgraded on street level.
Coun. Sarah Potts was among council members keen to hear the public’s view on what would bring a major change to the downtown, saying there has been little correspondence. ....

Times Colonist Christmas Fund match challenges help put the 'fun' in fundraising


Another reason is a series of match challenges that have helped to put more fun into fundraising.
The largest challenge came from Andrew Sheret Ltd., which offered $20,000 if another company or individual would donate at least that much. Price’s Lock and Safe met the challenge.
Looking through the list of donors, it’s hard to miss the support given to the fund by local family-owned businesses such as Andrew Sheret and Price’s. Note who is here for the community in this time of need.
Some $10,000 challenges have already been completed, but two more are outstanding.
Norman Spector, who served as a deputy minister in B.C. and Ottawa, an ambassador, and a newspaper publisher, says he will match $500 donations by current or retired public servants to a maximum of $10,000. ....
