Long in coming - Barbados Today

Lawyers practising at the local Bar have welcomed Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham’s recommendation to overhaul and modernise the judicial system. They say, it’s long overdue.Barry Gale, King’s Counsel and a council member of the Barbados Bar Association (BBA) said on Thursday that for years respective bar council leaders have unsuccessfully advocated for the modernisation of the  judicial system.“This is nothing new as far as the Bar is concerned. Successive presidents of the bar council have been advocating for years to the judicial council for modernisation of the judicial system and for more resources. In particular, I welcome the imminent appointment of a court administrator. We have reached out to successive Attorneys General to try to get that implemented, without any success for over 10 years now,” Gale said in an interview with Barbados TODAY. In a candid speech on Tuesday, the Chief Justice stressed the need to address severe staff shortages in the judiciary ....

Three men facing drugs, firearm and ammunition charges

Two men who had their guilty pleas vacated yesterday will find out their trial date next year. Beaten in custody, accused claims - Barbados Today

A lawyer who had been retained by murder accused Hakeem Roberto Stuart today told the court he had complained of being beaten while in police custody.That was the evidence of Rasheeda Edwards, who said Stuart requested to be seen by a medical practitioner and this was eventually granted.Edwards was on the witness stand as the murder trial against Stuart continued in the No.3 Supreme Court before Justice Carlisle Greaves.Stuart, 24, of Shelbourne Gap, St Lawrence, Christ Church, is accused of murdering Damian Trotman on March 21, 2019.Under questioning from defense counsel Andrew Pilgrim, KC, Edwards, who works alongside Pilgrim at his law firm Pilgrim and Associates, said she visited Stuart at the District ‘A’ Police Station on March 23, 2019. ....

Senior cop: No witnesses identified the accused

Lead investigator Inspector Dwayne Cumberbatch said no witness came forward stating that Hakeem Stuart was the perpetrator in a murder, and as such there was no identification parade or similar exercise to identify him.
