Spokesman Andrew Nori said Malaita Eagle Force bunkers and camps will be dismantled as part of the demilitarization process agreed to in the peace agreement signed in Townsville, Australia. Malaita Eagle Force members are also expected to leave Honiara within the next few days or weeks. (The ethnic conflict began when Guadalcanal militants tried to drive out settlers from another island, Malaita, claiming they dominated government and business and were taking over Guadalcanal land. ....
MALAITAN REBEL ATTACK KILLS 100, REPORTS PAPUA NEW GUINEA NEWSPAPER Submitted by piradmin on Wed, 06/07/2000 - 00:00 PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (June 8, 2000 - The National/PINA Nius Online) -Rebel fighters used an Australian-supplied patrol boat to shell rivals, killing up to 100 people, as the Solomon Islands yesterday slid towards outright civil war. Guerrillas from the Malaita Eagle Force (MEF) fired rounds from the boat s 50 mm cannon onto shore, blowing up an unoccupied school. Between 50 and 100 members of the opposing Isatabu Freedom Movement (IFM) died in the attack, said MEF leader Andrew Nori. Solomon Islands Special Minister of State Alfred Sasako also said the number of dead could be as high as 100. ....
