[email protected] The Altoona Area School District says taxes could increase nearly $19 in the next fiscal year for a property valued at $69,500, the median property value. While not specifying a projected millage rate, the increase would be based on the increase allowed by the state’s Act 1 index. Online state Department of Education figures show Act 1 allows the district to increase property taxes by up to 4.3%. The suggested tax hike would be $18.80 more for a property valued at $69,500 or $40.57 for a $150,000 property. Altoona Area School District Superintendent Charles Prijatelj said: “It isn’t until we get to the very high extreme (in property values) that we see taxes much larger, referring to the 11% of properties whose tax increase will be $81.14 or greater. ....

[email protected] Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School Principal Maureen Letcher has been elected president of the Pennsylvania Principals Association. The election, which ran for two weeks, was completed April 12, resulting in Letcher’s win. Another local winner in this year’s election was Tyrone Area Elementary School Principal Kristin Musselman, who secured the spot of Central 3 Elementary regional representative. Hollidaysburg Superintendent Robert Gildea said Letcher is a great fit for the role of president for the organization. “It is no surprise that Dr. Letcher was chosen by her peers for this leadership position,” he said. “She has played a critical leadership role with the county principals group since becoming the high school principal eight years ago. The state principals will benefit from her vision and advocacy for education and innate ability to lead effectively.” ....

[email protected] Inspired by a poem recited at President Joe Biden’s inauguration in January and the outpouring of support it received, Penn State Altoona English professor Erin Murphy came up with a unique way to keep the conversation flowing. The result is a written work about America, the challenges the country faces and the hope many have for a better tomorrow. Written by Penn State Altoona students, staff and faculty, the collective poem “In My America,” also celebrates April’s designation as national poetry month. Murphy said she was inspired to start the project after she heard Amanda Gorman recite her poem, “The Hill We Climb,” at the inauguration ceremony. ....
