Under new Iowa law, landlords can turn away Section 8 Vouchers The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program helps people pay off their rent if they need it. But there are changes coming in the state of Iowa. Under new Iowa law, landlords can turn away Section 8 Vouchers and last updated 2021-05-04 18:58:33-04 COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa. (KMTV) — Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a law ensuring landlords can turn away renters who have Section 8. It changes the ordinances of three cities that prevented landlords from discriminating against renters with Section 8 vouchers. Those cities are Des Moines, Iowa City and Marion. All we re trying to do here is control the expenses and the people that get into this business get in voluntarily, Andrew Lietzow, the Executive Director of the Iowa Landlord Association said. The more government restrictions that come in and say you must do this or that, the less they want to stay in the industry.

Iowa Governor Signs Law Letting Landlords Refuse Section 8 Vouchers

Iowa Governor Signs Law Letting Landlords Refuse Section 8 Vouchers Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed into a law a bill that prohibits the state’s localities from requiring landlords to accept federal rental assistance vouchers. Both chambers of the state’s legislature passed the bill in March. The law states that counties cannot enact laws that prohibit landlords from refusing to rent “to a person because of the person’s use of a federal housing choice voucher issued by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.” The DesMoines Register reported that the governor signed the bill. The state legislature’s website did not say whether the bill was signed, and the governor’s website did not feature an update on the matter. The governor’s office did not immediately respond to a request for an update.
