Earth spiked a bit of a fever in 2020, partly because of cleaner air from the pandemic lockdown, a new study found.
For a short time, temperatures in some places in the eastern United States, Russia and China were as much as half to two-thirds of a degree (.3 to .37 degrees Celsius) warmer. That’s due to less soot and sulfate particles from car exhaust and burning coal, which normally cool the atmosphere temporarily by reflecting the sun’s heat, Tuesday’s study in the journal Geophysical Research Letters reported. ....

The sprawling economic consequences of the pandemic slightly warmed the planet for several months last year, according to research released this week.
The warming blip started in March as the wildly spreading coronavirus shut down industries and subdued transportation around the world. Such diminishing activity leads to less planet-warming emissions.
So what gives?
While levels of CO2 and other gaseous pollutants were falling, so were emissions of aerosols that contain particles of sulfates, nitrates, black carbon and dust. ....

A new research, led by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), suggested that the Covid-19-induced lockdowns and reduced social engagements impacted emissions of pollutants, slightly making the planet warmer.
The study, published in the journal
Geophysical Research Letters, presented counter-intuitive findings that noted the influence of airborne particles, or aerosols, that block incoming sunlight.
When emissions of aerosols dropped last spring, more of the Sun’s warmth reached the planet, especially in heavily-industrialised nations. This includes the United States and Russia, which normally pump high amounts of aerosols into the atmosphere. ....

A new study by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) reports that the lockdowns and decrease in societal activity associated with the COVID-19 pandemic influenced emissions of pollutants such that the planet was slightly warmed for several months last year.

The results of the study emphasize the impact of airborne particles, or aerosols, that block incoming sunlight. With the drop in aerosol emissions last spring, the planet received more of the Sun’s warmth, specifically in heavily industrialized countries, like the United States and Russia, which normally release higher amounts of aerosols into the atmosphere. ....
