Prospects for medical marijuana in Kansas are dimming — for now


The prospects for legalized medical marijuana in Kansas are appearing increasingly dim, despite a House committee advancing a compromise proposal out of committee on Tuesday.
The bill would be somewhat more restrictive than a proposal considered in May in an attempt to win over the support of more conservative lawmakers, who want increased guardrails on a potential cannabis program.
But House and Senate leaders acknowledged it would be difficult for the bill to get across the finish line. Lawmakers are in the final days of the 2021 session, meaning marijuana advocates might be waiting until next year for their hopes to come to fruition. ....

Americans watched in horror. Then, colleagues, friends and family members began pointing out the faces of people they knew, had shared holidays with and, in the midst of a national security crisis, they began reporting them to federal officials.
Patrick McCaughey, who was charged with assaulting a police officer seen on video getting crushed by a door and screaming in pain, was reported to the FBI by someone who knew him from childhood, according to court documents. McCaughey’s attorney declined to comment.
Andrew Ericson, a 23-year-old man from Oklahoma, was charged with two misdemeanors related to the riot after an acquaintance reported his social media livestream to authorities, court documents show. Ericson’s attorney declined to comment. ....

Muskogee man charged in Capitol attack makes appearance in federal court

A Muskogee man appeared Monday during a virtual hearing in federal court on two criminal complaints related to the violence that erupted Jan. 6 at the U.S. Capitol during the certification of Electoral College votes.
Andrew C. Ericson, 23, faces one complaint of unlawfully entering a restricted building or grounds, and a second complaint alleges he took part in the violent entry and disorderly conduct while on the grounds of the Capitol, according to U.S. Justice Department records.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Kimberly E. West appointed a public defender to represent Ericson and authorized his release on a $10,000 unsecured bond. West ordered Ericson to surrender his passport to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the only destination to which he will be allowed to travel without the permission otherwise from the court here. ....
