Gujarat is facing a shortage of wildlife doctors for Asiatic lions as 14 out of 18 posts are lying vacant. The state has recorded 555 lion deaths in the past five years, highlighting the urgent need for veterinarians. The vacancies have led to only one vet being available for around 200 lions and other wild animals, instead of the ideal ratio of one vet for 30 big cats. The issue has been delayed due to a tussle between the veterinary and forest departments. The state government has now prioritized hiring wildlife vets.
