Further, the cut-off marks of the 2020 Grade 05 Scholarship Exam at other popular national and provincial schools across the country have risen compared to previous years.
Commenting on the matter at a media briefing, Minister of Trade – Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said the Ministry of Education, Subject Minister, and the Education Secretary lacks a clear understanding on the cut-off marks.
If a student scores 35 marks each for the two parts of the examination and manages to score above 70 marks, the student is considered to have passed the Grade 05 scholarship examination, Minister Dr. Gunawardena said. ....

Memorable action of late Alavi Moulana

Today, the 1st of January 2021 is the 89th birth anniversary of our legendary leader, the late Alavi Moulana. I recall joining a team, in my late teens, promoting teaching of the Sinhala language in Muslim schools. The prominent members of the team, then, were Ven. Devamottawe Amarawansa Thera, K.M.P. Rajaratne and Alavi Moulana, who was then in his prime youth.
We embarked on an inaugural campaign mission to Negombo, to a Muslim school where only Tamil was taught. The venue was already prepared by a group in support of our campaign to include Sinhala too. However, there was also some opposition to our move. As we approached the venue, from a distance we noted that there were people with black armbands and black flags. ....
