Researchers review materials used to design biosensors for SARS-CoV-2 detection

Researchers review materials used to design biosensors for SARS-CoV-2 detection
The SARS-CoV-2 virus is still causing a dramatic loss of human lives worldwide, constituting an unprecedented challenge for society, public health, and economy, to overcome. Currently, SARS-CoV-2 can be diagnosed in two different ways: i) antigen tests (point-of-care, POC) and ii) molecular tests (nucleic acid, RNA, or PCR-polymerase chain reaction).
Antigen tests can detect parts of SARS-CoV-2 proteins, known as antigens, via a nasopharyngeal or nasal swab sampling method. The main advantages of POC-test include the high specificity, quick response (less than an hour), and portability, with no need of fixed laboratory facilities. ....

Quantum dot-based affinity biosensors in microfluidic systems offer an alternative SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics platform

Quantum dot-based affinity biosensors in microfluidic systems offer an alternative SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics platform
In a new study published in
Emergent Materials, researchers show how microfluidic systems integrated with quantum dot-based affinity biosensors can serve as a valuable platform to rapidly and accurately diagnose severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection.
What are quantum dots?
Quantum dots (QD) are nanoscale semiconductor crystals (size: 2-10 nm) with unique optical and electronic characteristics. Such nanomaterials are widely used in biosensing applications for biomedical and bioanalytical purposes. Unlike organic dyes and protein-based fluorophores, QDs have a wide absorption spectrum and narrow emission bands, which make them very suitable for cell imaging and biosensor applications. Specifically, QDs can be used to trace multiple biological targets simultaneously with simple instrumentations. Other properties of QDs th ....

The Future of Environmental and Food Monitoring

The Future of Environmental and Food Monitoring
Sponsored Content by PittconFeb 12 2021
In this interview, News-Medical Life Sciences talks to Professor Antje Baeumner about the future of food and environmental monitoring, the subject of her Pittcon presentation.
Thought LeadersProfessor Antje BaeumnerInstitute of Analytical Chemistry and BiosensorsUniversity of Regensburg
What are some techniques used to monitor the environment and food?
A broad range of analytical chemical methods is used for environmental monitoring and food safety. Some of these are lab-based techniques, such as mass spectrometry, GC, HPLC and chromatography, while some are technologies that can also be used on-site.
These on-site technologies are typically dominated by portable, self-sustained sensors, either biosensors or chemosensors. ....
