BioSolar Launches Green Hydrogen Subsidiary | San Fernando Valley Business Journal

Battery technology company BioSolar Inc. on Monday announced it has launched a wholly owned subsidiary focused on producing green hydrogen at a lower cost.
Dubbed NewHydrogen Inc., the subsidiary will build on green hydrogen technology. Green hydrogen is the power source for fuel cell electric vehicles, the Santa Clarita company said, with hydrogen produced via renewable means, as opposed to hydrogen-carbon-based energy in natural gas and other fossil fuels.
NewHydrogen plans to develop green hydrogen electrolyzer technology – splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen – using inexpensive materials.
“Unfortunately, high efficiency electrolyzers are expensive and rely on rare earth materials such as platinum and iridium – literally stardust found only in asteroids,” BioSolar said in its statement. “These materials account for nearly 50 percent of the cost of electrolyzers.” ....

Advanced Bionics in Valencia, in collaboration with fellow Sonova Group subsidiary Phonak, on Thursday announced it has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market its cochlear implant technology platform.
The technology suite, called Marvel, offers cochlear implant sound processors for adults and children; a smartphone app for adjustments to the processor; hearing aids for those with severe hearing loss in both ears; and software to help hearing care professionals program cochlear implants, the company said in a statement.
Sound processors for cochlear implants are fitted behind the ear, capturing sound signals and sending them to an implanted receiver which bypasses inner-ear damage. Hearing aids, by contrast, simply amplify sound. ....

Amgen Gets Favorable FDA Designation | San Fernando Valley Business Journal

Amgen Inc. has received a breakthrough therapy designation from the Food and Drug Administration for an investigational drug to treat advanced, metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer.
The coveted designation expedites development and regulatory review of medicines that meet an unmet need. Positive Phase 2 data led to the designation, Amgen said. Patients in this trial saw their cancer progress despite prior treatment with chemotherapy and in some cases immunotherapy as well.
The drug, called sotorasib, targets the most common mutation in this type of lung cancer, which is found in approximately 25,000 U.S. patients every year.
“Amgen has taken on one of the toughest challenges of the last 40 years in cancer research by developing sotorasib,” the biotech giant said in a statement. The inhibitor is being studied across four continents with more than 600 patients involved. ....
