RI Gov. Dan McKee signs 'landmark' climate bill

NEWPORT More than 100 people packed the western end of Bowen’s Wharf Saturday afternoon as Gov. Dan McKee signed what speakers called the “landmark” Act on Climate aimed at cutting the state’s greenhouse-gas emissions to net-zero by 2050.
“This is a milestone in the fight against climate change,” said McKee, who was accompanied by multiple state leaders. “Rhode Island is already feeling its impacts across our economy and our environment. With 400 miles of coastline, the Ocean State is on the front lines of this climate crisis.”
“This legislation presents an opportunity to enhance our economy, our public health, environmental equity, and our natural environment,” he said. “The Act on Climate is a bold response to a serious threat.” ....

Several Rhode Island communities have implemented their own plastic bag bans.
PROVIDENCE, RI Rhode Island lawmakers will again consider a statewide plastic bag ban. Senate President Dominick Ruggerio and Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee once again introduced legislation that would require stores to offer recyclable or reusable alternatives to single-use plastic bags.
The dangers plastic pollution poses to oceans and marine wildlife is well-documented, and plastic use overall contributes to the degradation of our environment, Ruggerio said.
A statewide plastic bag ban is not a new debate in Rhode Island. Legislation has been introduced in both 2019 and 2020 and approved by the Senate, but never made it to the governor s desk. ....

State rules on 'forever' PFAS chemicals in drinking water in limbo

PROVIDENCE Last February, a top official with the Rhode Island Department of Health assured lawmakers that the state was on the verge of coming up with regulations on so-called “forever chemicals” found in firefighting foam, cookware and food packaging that have contaminated drinking water supplies across the nation.
A drinking water standard for compounds in the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance, or PFAS, family would be presented to Gov. Gina Raimondo’s office in March and be ready for the public to see by May, associate director of health Seema Dixit told the House Environment and Natural Resources Committee at a hearing on Feb. 6, 2020. ....

PROVIDENCE  There was no debate last winter about what Rhode Island’s environmental groups wanted the General Assembly to do in its 2020 session.
The Environment Council of Rhode Island had only one item on its list of legislative priorities winning passage of a law that would finally make targets adopted years ago for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions mandatory and enforceable in the state. ....
