A new office set up to review allegations of human-rights abuses perpetrated by Canadian companies abroad should have the power to compel documents and testimony, say MPs studying the rights of Uighurs in China.
MPs say Ottawa should ensure that the Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (CORE) “has the power to conduct independent investigations, the authority to compel documents and testimony from companies and their executives, and the resources to investigate alleged human-rights abuses.”
The recommendation was made in a report tabled on Friday by the House of Commons subcommittee on International Human Rights, which is examining the situation of Uighurs in China.
U.S. Issues Total Ban on Xinjiang Cotton and Tomatoes

The U.S. government has banned the importation of all cotton and tomatoes produced in Xinjiang over concerns about the widespread use of forced labor in the region. The move is the most sweeping measure to date to block the import of goods made in Xinjiang, which produces as much as 20% of the world’s supply of cotton. Reuters’ David Lawder
The action applies to raw fibers, apparel and textiles made from Xinjiang-grown cotton, as well as tomato-based food products and seeds from the region. The ban, knows as a withhold release order, also applies to products processed or manufactured in third countries, CBP officials told a news briefing.
