The fact that the Aligarh Muslim University was established for Muslims cannot be ignored, observed the Supreme Court on Wednesday while dealing with a case concerning whether AMU is entitled to claim minority status.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday made it clear that the alignment of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) founders during colonial times will not have a bearing on the constitutionality of the institute's minority status.
The comment was made during the third day of hearings before a seven judge Supreme Court bench which is dealing with a batch of petitions concerning the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
The Supreme Court orally observed that an institute is not barred from enjoying minority status only because it is regulated by a statute, while hearing a case concerning the minority status of the AMU.
