 December 29, 2020: The U.S. Navy recently announced that it would resume naming attack submarines after sea creatures, a tradition that became standard during World War II when many of the most successful submarines compiled legendary combat records. To honor particularly successful subs lost in action the name would be passed on to a newly built sub. All this was great for morale but in the 1960s it began to change as more and more of the new SSNs (nuclear attack subs) were named after politicians who had been good to the navy, especially the navy budget. Those that were not named after politicians were named after cities, which was seen as a useful public relations tool. Crew morale was no longer a major consideration but now it is, in part because it is increasingly difficult to recruit sailors to serve on the nuclear subs.
