Nigeria’s electoral body, INEC, has announced dates for by-elections into two vacant legislative seats in Jigawa and Kaduna states.
The commission in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Festus Okoye, on Friday, declared June 19, 2021, as the date for the conduct of by-elections to fill the vacant seat for Gwaram Federal Constituency of Jigawa State and Sabon Gari Constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly.
While the Gwaram Federal Constituency of Jigawa State became vacant following the demise of Yuguda Hassan-Kila on March 4, the Sabon Gari Constituency in Kaduna state became vacant due to the failure of its former occupant, Aminu Shagali, to attend one-third of the assembly meetings.

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has declared the seat of the immediate past Speaker of the Assembly, Aminu Shagali vacant for being absent from all legislative activities for more than a year without any reason.
Spokesman of the Assembly, Tanimu Musa in an interview with Channels Television, explained that by such action, the former Speaker, representing Sabon Gari constituency, ceases to be a member of the House for violating section 109, subsection one, paragraph F of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He said that the Clerk of the Assembly has been told to communicate with the Independent National Electoral Commission to set up a new date of re-run for the seat.

He was Speaker of the House between 2012 and 2015.
A former Speaker and serving member of the House, Dr Aminu Shagali confirmed the news on Wednesday in a tweet, saying, “We regret to announce the demise of our former distinguished Honorable Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly (2013-2015), Hon. Ahmad Hassan Jumare (Branco), who lost his life after a brief illness, May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Paradise.”
The late Jumare was a Political Adviser to former Vice President Namadi Sambo and the immediate past Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kaduna State.
