Guatemalan government imposes “state of prevention” in response to protests
Guatemala’s president Alejandro Giammattei announced July 12 that the government was going to impose a “state of prevention” from July 14-28. The announcement followed protests demanding his resignation for his mishandling of the pandemic and lack of vaccinations.
On July 10, about 300 protesters had gathered in the capital Guatemala City’s Constitution Plaza to denounce corruption and demand Giammattei’s resignation. In announcing the state of prevention, the president tried to shift the blame for the pandemic onto the protesters, saying, “My complaint is against those people who are promoting the virus and who become more upset. .. and they are promoting it through a series of illegal demonstrations.” ....

A three-alarm fire ripped through the Domino Sugar facility in Baltimore Tuesday afternoon, destroying a storage silo. No injuries were reported as firefighters battled the blaze for hours. Several employees had to be rescued by fire boat.
According to Blair Adams of the Baltimore City Fire Department, the fire originated in a storage shed that contains raw sugar, made its way to a conveyer belt, and traveled up the conveyor belt.”

April 20 (UPI) A three-alarm fire broke out at Domino Sugar s raw sugar storage shed in Baltimore on Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
Fire crews responded to reports of heavy smoke in the area at about 3 p.m. as the blaze caused the building to collapse.

The fire that was started or originated in and around the silo managed to make its way to the conveyer belt and traveled just a short distance up the conveyor belt, Blair Adams of the Baltimore City Fire Department told local station WJZ. ....
