Whitework: Women Stitching Identity opens at Kentucky Museum


Featuring textiles from the Kentucky Museum and Kentucky Historical Society, 
Whitework: Women Stitching Identity explores the significance of early white embellished textiles that have been largely ignored, undervalued, and misinterpreted.
Whitework holds a “special place” within the cultural geography of textile making, connecting regional textile making with broader narratives of American women’s lives, political participation, and self-expression during the formative years of the Early Republic.
 
What is Whitework?
Disregarded for years as an exaggeration of American colonial self-sufficiency or as fancy work made for a future home, recent research has shown that whitework textiles are elaborate both in make and meaning. In make, the textiles are often an elaborate arrangement of intricately stitched motifs expressed in large scale. The Depot Museum welcomes visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 2-5 p.m. by donation.
There s a number of highlights to the Spring 2021 Display.
Quilts
Quilts by Lucyle Jewett, Halstead’s nationally known quilt maker who was featured in the book Uncoverings 1997 published by the American Quilt Study Group, are displayed. Other quilts featured are by other Jewett family members with Quaker backgrounds that include Rachel Adella Jewett, Lucyle’s mother, and her grandmother, Hannah Little Smith. These quilts showcase exquisite quilting stitches, unmatched applique techniques and flawless piecing. An 1893 friendship quilt from the Fairview Quaker community, signed by thirty local women, is also available for viewing.  ....

Nancy Lou Losee, 87, worked in preservation of historic fabrics, garments and quilts at Colonial Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG Nancy Lou Losee, 87, wife of retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Ronald M. Losee, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2021, in Williamsburg.
Mrs. Losee was born in 1933 in Oak Park, Illinois. She graduated from Oak Park High School and attended the University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University until she married her loving husband in 1954. A devoted wife and mother, she dedicated her life to her family and her enthusiasm and generosity were unwavering characteristics.
As a young mother, she became active in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, local PTA groups and numerous similar organizations. She concurrently involved herself with community, church and military activities wherever the Marines sent the family. For years, she volunteered with Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society, helping young servicemen in need. She was a leader of a POW-MIA recovery organization at Quantico and was named Quantico Marine Base Wife of the Year in 1972. She maint ....
