Je zou het misschien niet zeggen als je me zo ziet, maar ik ben echt dol op Amerika, en naar goede gewoonte heb ik afgelopen zondag dan ook de 4de van juli uitbundig gevierd. 245 jaar geleden was het dat de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring ondertekend werd, met daarin aandacht voor de rechten van elke burger: het recht op leven, op vrijheid en op het nastreven van geluk. Onder die vrijheid werd uiteraard ook godsdienstvrijheid verstaan, een maatschappelijke verworvenheid die door het brede Belgische publiek vandaag niet echt meer wordt ervaren als zijnde van het allergrootste belang: in de wereld van nu, waarin je geen krant kunt openvouwen of de een of andere beroemdheid is erin aan het expliceren hoe hij indertijd zijn ontmaagding beleefd heeft, wordt godsdienst immers als een strikte privézaak beschouwd, als iets wat achter gesloten deuren thuishoort, in een sfeertje van heimelijkheid
