Oh you dirty, filthy rat
Cape Cod’s set for you a trap
Long have you this earth encumbered
But your days are surely numbered
In the High Court of Appeal
Your case has had a good fair deal
Now the home folks of Cape Cod
Are going to plant you ‘neath the sod.
Written by an anonymous poet at The Farm Bureau of Cape Cod, this and other verse announced the start of The Rat War of 1923-24. This was merely the best-known episode in a man-versus-rat struggle that has long been waged and that continues to this day. ....
