Set in Depression-era America, a breathtaking story of five extraordinary women and their remarkable journey through the mountains of Kentucky and beyond.
Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England. But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically.
While everybody coped with the onset of the pandemic differently, from baking to home improvement projects to knitting and everything in between, it’s no secret that many people turned to books to escape lockdown boredom and stress.
With library buildings closed to the public because of coronavirus, many readers sought digital titles on Libby, an app run by Overdrive that allows library patrons to check out ebooks and digital audio books.
Several Lake Travis-area libraries saw increased demand for books on Libby last year. Megan Fischer, the Bee Cave technical services librarian, said Libby has increased in popularity among library patrons since the pandemic started, with a 7% increase in Overdrive users and an 18% increase in digital checkouts.
