The first American Arbor Day was originated by J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska City, Nebraska, at an annual meeting of the Nebraska State board of agriculture held in Lincoln. On April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted in Nebraska. Birdsey Northrop of Connecticut was responsible for globalizing the idea when he visited Japan in 1883 and delivered his Arbor Day and Village Improvement message. In that same year, the American Forestry Association made Northrop the Chairman of the committee to campaign for Arbor Day nationwide. He also brought his enthusiasm for Arbor Day to Australia, Canada, and Europe.

Paddock Lake village officials and a few local residents celebrated Arbor Day 2021 Saturday.
This year’s celebration included the planting of a tree on the south end of the Village Hall property.
This is Paddock Lake’s 21st Arbor Day celebration. The village is an official Tree City USA.
Village President Terry Burns and Trustee Renee Brickner made statements as part of the ceremony. Other officials attending were Trustees Barb Brenner, Scott Garland and Gloria Walter and village administrator Tim Popanda.

Interestingly the very first documented occurrence of a society celebrating Arbor Day, or the planting of trees, was held in the Spanish village of Mondoñedo in 1594. Making this holiday over 400 years old according to human history. The first American Arbor Day celebration was held in Nebraska City, Nebraska in 1872 as they planted more than a million trees in a single day. In the early 1900s Arbor Day gained national traction with President Theodore Roosevelts conservation policy and on April 15th, 1907 President Roosevelt issued a Proclamation to The School Children of the United States for Arbor Day and about the importance of trees and our national forests nationwide.
