Because the sense from a senior european official who has been in touch with the white house, they said the sense they get is that donald trump doesn t know what he wants to achieve and has just sort of said get me in the room with this guy and we ll figure it out. jonathan can i ask a quick one? the real issue here in a lot of ways is the distraction factor. in other words the heads of state and government i ve been to many of these nato summits, you know they have serious issues they want to get on the table. they can t get to it. what are a couple of the serious issues that are kind of being boxed out here? you know better thanme, i m more, what they ve told me is more what they re worried about in terms of donald trump s you know, interactions with vladimir putin. and how that would potentially weaken what is already fractured alliance. look, donald trump himself is fixated on the defense spending, that s the issue that he s fixated on. he sees nato as a collection of countries ....
It s the same situation with other european allies where trump views these countries as they owe america money. one european official said that he s a landlord and we re the tenants and he s calling on rent. shepard: do the europeans as a whole have a strategy to deal with it? if so, what is it? no. they ve been doing different strategies. angela merkel has pretty much been tough all along. you ve seen emmanuel macron, the french leader who has really sucked up to trump for the longest team. more recently i think has come up against the limits of that strategy. so he s pivoted a little bit. the britts probably somewhere in between. they have no one has figured out how to talk to trump. none of the european leaders have. certainly none of the three that i mentioned. shepard: jonathan from ....
Respects cojones and another white house report in response to the g7, we are american bees. it seems like this is a locker room of frat boys driving this policy. what do you make of this approach to foreign policy? it seems to be driven bay sense of manhood that s deeply problematic. well i don t think there s some great mystery about donald trump there isn t this, as meeko and joe know for many years there isn t this private donald trump with voluminous layers, he is who he is. you ve seen him in public for 30 years. so there is that. but donald trump sees the world as a series of countries that owe america money. it is literally, he s not viewing the world as collections, alliances, regions. there is a little bit of that. but it s you owe us money. what can i squeeze out of you. to give in his mind, the american worker a better deal. ....
Countries that owe america money, and he looks at north korea as an enemy, but one that he is uniquely placed, donald j. trump in his mind the greatest negotiator and deal mar in history. is it an honorable country in his eyes? an honorable man, honorable people? trump doesn t see the world like that. you know, that chris. he doesn t see the world he saiat he said this is honorable. this guy is about me with his honorable tonight. because he uses adjectives doesn t mean that he sees the world in that way. and you know, chris, from having observed trump for a long time, he doesn t sort of give countries a mental score based on their human rights record and various other issues. he cease america as a country that needs to defend itself and stand up for itself and get the best deal possible. and, again, you look at the transatlantic relationships. these are long historical relationships that donald trump is reducing to things like a dispute over dairy tariffs. ....
But it still fits. any final thoughts before we turn to our other tragedy in the spotlight? i think the other thing that needs to be spoken about is his inability in any way to be respectful to people that don t look like him. when you talk about puerto rico and you talk about the u.s. virgin islands, we re people of color and we are in some cases obviously low income as well. and he does not he has a true disconnect, somehow any sort of assistance that s provided to us is a handout, it s charity, as opposed to us meriting it that we deserve it. someone who has availed himself to bankruptcy how many times over at the expense of others and making it seem that somehow we re on the dole and we re costs america money. he did not do that with texas, he did not do that with florida there s a real, real difference here about how he interacts with ....
