Rebholz, 48, grew up in Portland. She s the daughter of former professional baseball player and late Reed College professor Jerry Barta, whose legacy at Reed still lives on in its physical education program. When my dad taught at Reed, there were three student suicides in a year, Rebholz said. He went to the administration and said I want to make P.E. a requirement. I don t care if it s climbing a tree or jumping a rope. These kids need to be active and socialize.

The past year the year of the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us a lot.
One of the many important things we ve learned is the importance of educators in our lives and the lives of our children.
With in-person learning in Oregon shuttered since last March due to pandemic restrictions, our state s educators have had to step up in unprecedented fashion, finding new ways to connect with students, new ways to communicate with parents, and effectively reinventing the world of education in the era of distance learning.
