The fact there were a thousand fewer DWI arrests filed in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court last year shows how statistics can sometimes be misleading. With bars, nightclubs and entertainment venues closed throughout much of the COVID-19 pandemic and less overall traffic, police filed 1,044 fewer DWI cases in the metro court than in 2019.
But at the same time, Bernalillo County had 82 more DWI-related crashes last year than in 2019, up from 483 to 565 in 2020. And the percentage of crashes that are DWI-related so far this year – 35.6% – is up from 29.8% in 2020 and 16.3% in 2019.

Police have said Martinez was speeding. Ortiz told officers the women had been drinking and that at least one child was sitting on the floor when the crash occurred.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) A grieving father has come forward to say his 7-year-old daughter was one of the two children killed in a crash along Interstate 25 on Tuesday morning.
Friends and family gathered at a South Valley park Wednesday night to remember Amariah Moya.
Joseph Moya told Albuquerque TV station KRQE that he was supposed to come into town from Utah this weekend to celebrate Easter with his daughter, but now he has to plan her funeral instead.
He said he got a call from his daughter’s aunt saying there was an emergency.

According to police, the children died at the hands of a mother. All because the parents decided to drink and drive on the roadway,” Lt. Wheeler said.
Lt. Wheeler said two mothers had four of their own children in the car. The driver was later identified as Alexis Martinez, 23, and the front right passenger was identified as Danielle Ortiz, 23.
On early Tuesday, police were called to the scene of an accident where their four-door Chevy collided with a concrete barrier north of the Big-I. APD said speed and alcohol played a role in the crash.
