Mila Kunis, Juliette Lewis, Wanda Sykes talk Breaking News

Director Tate Taylor’s previous outing Ma took a tongue-in-cheek approach to the horror genre. He applies a similarly comical lens to the small-town crime yarn, Breaking News In Yuba County, which unites an astounding ensemble of stars around the seemingly mild-mannered Sue Buttons, played by Allison Janney. The sprawling cast includes heavyweights like Wanda Sykes, Mila Kunis, and Juliette Lewis reuniting with the director for a third time who all relished the opportunity to dive into the juicy screenplay, from first-time feature writer Amanda Idoko. During the recent press day for Breaking News, The A.V. Club spoke to the three stars about how they infused their roles with a little of their own personality, and learned how filming in suburban Mississippi rubbed off on them as well. We also had the trio pitch us on some spin-offs for each of their characters and, suffice to say, Juliette Lewis is eager to show us more of her nosy news anchor Gloria Michaels.

Breaking News In Yuba County review: a maudlin and cruel comedy

Advertisement It’s a tricky thing, trying to figure out where Breaking News In Yuba County went wrong. The ingredients promise a comedy that, at worst, should be far from dull. There’s a cast top-lined by Allison Janney and Regina Hall, a formidable duo. There’s Amanda Idoko’s screenplay, which spent a couple of years on the Black List; it’s appealingly spiky in some places and promisingly (if precariously) convoluted in others. There’s the rest of the ensemble, a roster of names all but guaranteed to spark some interest, especially in proximity to each other: Wanda Sykes and Ellen Barkin, Awkwafina and Matthew Modine, Juliette Lewis and Bridget Everett, Dominic Burgess and Mila Kunis. Yet none of the curious friction of its story, nor in its cast, results in any sort of frisson of excitement, dread, or even shock. The best
