A DOCUMENTARY film tracing the history of pageants throughout Britain is being made - and its inspiration comes from an extraordinary Dorset event.
Dorset-based Windrose Rural Media Trust is behind the film, looking at pageants dating from the 1900s to the present day. Filming has stopped due to the pandemic but will resume once restrictions are lifted.
Its inspiration is the Sherborne Pageant of 1905 which became known as the Mother of All Pageants. Involving an unpaid cast and organising team of 900 with lavish costumes, an orchestra and 50 horses, it played to an audience of thousands.
The event made a profit - used to create today’s Pageant Gardens - and set an example which was taken up by communities across Britain and abroad and continued over generations. ....
