The Aleutian islands and the Alaskan peninsula were first settled around 8000 to 9000 years ago by the Aleut/Unangax and the Alutiiq/Sugpiaq. Thier culture remained largely unchanged until the 1700âs when Russian explorers came to the islands/peninsula. The Russians started the largest permanent settlement at Lliulluk on the Unalaska island, later the townâs name was changed to Unalaska.
