Bernice Downey ‘09, ‘14

Downey is driven to create change and says it’s why she chose a health profession. A mother and grandmother of Ojibwe and Celtic heritage, she received a BSc in nursing from the University of Ottawa then came to McMaster after gaining experience in the nursing field to pursue her masters, PhD and post-doctoral work in medical anthropology.
A life-long advocate in the work of addressing the serious health inequalities among Indigenous populations in Canada, Downey continued at McMaster after her studies, joining the School of Nursing in 2017, cross-appointed with the Department of Psychiatry and Neuro-Behavioural Sciences. She also led the Indigenous Health Initiative with the Faculty of Health Sciences and the development of the McMaster Indigenous Research Institute. ....

SMSU on display at Lyon Co. Historical Museum | News, Sports, Jobs

Jennifer Andries, executive director of the Lyon County Historical Museum, sits in the SMSU display area on the newly-renovated second floor, which opened in January.
A new exhibit in the Lyon County Historical Museum features Southwest Minnesota State University as part of a number of exhibits on the newly-renovated second floor.
The SMSU exhibit includes a replica of the concrete pillar which held up the “Dome,” the most identifiable architectural landmark on campus prior to the Jan. 2, 2002 fire that destroyed Food Service East and affected every other building on campus.
The display features several glossy posters highlighting various aspects of university history. One is about former SMSU President Jon Wefald, the man credited with saving SMSU when enrollments dipped critically. There’s one about the old Student Center lounge.
