An avid bridge player, a voracious reader, a ham radio operator, World War II veteran and father, Ed McCauley of Altoona turns 100 on Friday, and until recently, he ran a mile each morning.
This retired electrical engineer has accomplished a lot, but he feels he still has more to do such as improving his bridge game to reach a nationally recognized status, as a Life Master.
“I’m no expert,” he said modestly, sitting at his kitchen table, which holds his smartphone, a Kindle and, on a nearby counter, sits the computer that he uses to play bridge against local and national players. ....

ALTOONA, Pa. Longtime philanthropic leaders Steve and Nancy Sheetz have made a new gift to Penn State Altoona totaling $2.7 million. The couple, who were named the University’s Philanthropists of the Year in 2010, have deepened their commitment to the Sheetz Fellows Program, which offers mentorship, special programming and financial support to Penn State Altoona students with the capacity to lead and serve in the local community and beyond. The Sheetz gift will also create the first fund at the campus for students facing financial emergencies, as well as an endowment targeted to Ivyside Eats, a program that addresses food insecurity among Penn State Altoona students. ....

ALTOONA, Pa. The Penn State Altoona Athletics Advisory Council announced its first Hall of Fame class on Feb. 17, naming five individuals and one team as its inaugural group of inductees.
Selected to the Penn State Altoona Athletics Hall of Fame are:
Fredina M. Ingold, Penn State Altoona Athletics administrator, 1977-2014
Jillian Klinar, women’s basketball, 2000-02
Tyler Franklin, men’s basketball, 2003-07
Tim Wassell, men’s soccer, 2004-05; women’s soccer coach, 2007-09
The 1995-96 Penn State Altoona women’s volleyball team
Dr. Richard Miller, men’s basketball, 1966-68
Ingold and Miller enter the Hall of Fame as Distinguished Achievement Inductees. ....
