Published: 24 January 2021 PHILIPSBURG: - Citing health & safety concerns and a lack of prior information from the St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF), three of the event’s main sponsors, Motorworld, International Liquor & Tobacco N.V., and TelEm Group, have informed that they are postponing their support for the staging of Carnival 2021. In a jointly signed letter to SCDF President, Mr. Alston Lourens late Friday, the three sponsors informed of a meeting that took place on Thursday, January 21, 2021, to come to their decision. All expressed concern that the Carnival organizers intend to press ahead with St. Maarten’s premier touristic event despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on St. Maarten and around the world. The three sponsors also expressed “disappointment” in SCDF for not informing them first before having to read about the decision in the media and from third parties. ....
Published: 22 January 2021 PHILIPSBURG: - The St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) has rolled out a safety and health plan for Carnival 2021 with the most COVID-19 preventative measures than any other event to date. The foundation went public for the first time with a plan that covers every aspect of the festival in April and one that attempts to create a fully sanitized bubble in Carnival Village. In other words, every person that enters the village will pass through sanitizing measures including state-of-the-art sanitizing tunnels. Once in Carnival Village patrons will have to adhere to strict measures (see below). The foundation also secured its only road events, the Parades, as much as possible with a spacious route change and restrictions for the troupes. ....
Published: 20 January 2021 ~ Safety plan launching on Friday ~ President of the St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) Alston Lourens on Wednesday said this misconception that Carnival organizers and stakeholders are fighting “just to party” belittles what the festival means for employment and economy. “We are not fighting to wukup,” he said, we are fighting to work!” Lourens explained that the foundation fully understands concerns, but is simply asking for the chance to remedy a terrible situation for its stakeholders and generate economic activity for the country.
