Djab Wurrung Gunnai Gunditjmara Senator Lidia Thorpe should be congratulated for putting a Treaty with First Nations people on the political agenda. Progressives need to support that campaign, argue Jacob Andrewartha and Sue Bolton.
First Nations senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has slammed Lidia Thorpe as immature after she called the Queen a coloniser and gave a Black Power salute in parliament on Monday.
Dressed in black, 48-year-old Lidia Thorpe marched across the floor of the Senate in Canberra and mockingly recited her version of the oath of allegiance to Her Majesty.
“I used to punch the boys and the girls out, but now I’ve learnt to use my mouth,” says the Greens senator who has made enemies inside and out of parliament, and even within the Aboriginal community.
